Before beginning the project I truly believed I knew what was important about helping hands. Now I know I was wrong. Their job is difficult and it is not easy to prioritize. Last week we were asked to describe the planning process. I found that planning, re-planning, and being open for additional planning was the best process in this complicated assignment. In the past I have been quick to make decisions using assumptions, going forward I will spend more time on the planning process. As you flip through my slide show you will see that I chose to use a vibrant color for the background. I chose to use the color orange because the department uniforms are orange. I felt the orange background served two purposes: it created unity between the slides and the department. Because our helping hands department fills many roles, there are times when they may forget what they are really there for. My hope was that using orange would assist me in emphasizing my points about service and setting us apart. Although many roles are being filled, ultimately the number one priority is incredible customer service. Since prioritizing tasks was one of my goals I attempted to organize the slides in an order that would support that concept. At first I put the images of tasks in the order I wanted them done. As I observed the employees I realized there would be tasks that were rarely completed if they were low on the priority list. Although some task should be completed first, all of the task must be completed consistently. To avoid neglecting low priority tasks I grouped all the tasks by category. I put items together that could be done simultaneously. While you are baggin groceries you can then walk a customer to their car. When you are talking a customer to their car you can straighten signs and then bring in stray carts. I also chose to put my top priorities at the end and then create a final slide putting the categories in order of importance. Why did make safety my top priority when throughout the majority of their shift helping hands employees are pushing carts. They are keeping the lot clear so that customers have carts to shop with, carts are not blocking parking spaces, and carts are not pushed/blown into parked cars. This is an important aspect of high standards and customer service however it can be dangerous for the employees, especially in inclement weather. My experience in retail management is that work related injuries and customer injuries are expensive. Not only do you have medical bills but you have lost wages. More importantly than that, someone is injured. If I did not care about this I would not be living by the values. Also, without this employee we would be working short-handed and find it more difficult to provide exceptional customer service. In addition, injuries send the wrong message. The store is located in a small community. Sending the message that it is unsafe due to cleanliness or maintenance would be severely detrimental. To prevent injury, equipment is provided for employees. I provided images of this equipment and additional safety related equipment for use in the parking lot and entrance. One slide has images showing jackets, gloves and shoe covers. These supplies are not shown being used because I was unable to get an image that captured the environment. I would like to replace these images with images reflecting proper environments when available. Another slide has images of equipment used for snow and ice maintenance. I chose to take pictures of these in the location where they are stored. I felt that the background gave employees more information about the products. (i. e. proper storage, where to locate) Two visuals I chose to exclude from my project are the competitor’s logos. We have a couple of discount grocery stores in the area. Although the quality of goods does not compare to ours and our prices are competitive (unit for unit), it can be difficult to explain this to shoppers when the competitor’s price is lower and the box looks the same size. Rather than try to compare apples to oranges, we choose to provide a level of service and quality of product you cannot get anywhere else. The helping hands employees are instrumental in our success. One of the most common comments you will hear from managers is â€Å"you can get bananas and bread anywhere, why are our customers coming here? † I wanted to put a reminder to this in my presentation however due to copyright laws I felt it easier to focus on what we do and not what our competitor’s do not do. During the planning stage I selected the fonts and layout I felt I would use. When I was putting it all together I changed many aspects of my plan. I had originally selected â€Å"impact† as the font for all safety related topics/items. When I actually applied this font I found it was not as legible as I had intended. I decided to change the font to â€Å"arial bold†. The font I used for the other aspects of the presentation was â€Å"arial†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ using â€Å"arial bold† allowed the text to stand out while still maintaining the uniformity of the project. Another change I made was to eliminate the text effects. It made sense while I was planning the project however when I used them I found it attracted attention to the text and detracted from the visuals. When I considered learnings in week 2, I opted to eliminate any effects that did not draw attention to the focal points. I felt the same message could be sent without them and removing them eliminated a cluttered appearance. Each slide in my presentation has a bold topic on the page creating a uniformity; images that have a specific focal point have markings attracting attention to them; and consistent fonts that are easy to read are used for each topic. I used outlines to draw attention to the focal points on the images and used images that I believe had enough visual information to be a universal language. I also used empty space to eliminate distractions and draw attention to correct information. Each stage in this project has shown me how much more important the one before it was.

Part of that prosperity was in preparing a home for themselves and their families. Homes tell rich stories about society and the values and principles within that society. The hovel-to-house home patterns that exist in the early stages of our historical development show the regional and social differences between the people settling the Americas. In studying the housing of our ancestors we can discover what types of resources were available at the time, the priorities of the time, family make-ups, permanence of people, and what type of skilled workers were available within a geographic zone. We also can learn about the hardships that may have been endured. When studying the housing differences between colonial New England and the Chesapeake Bay region of our country we discover a sharp contrast in the time frame within which people built and made substantial dwellings for themselves and their families. The Chesapeake Bay region remained largely made up of shanties, lean-tos, and rough simple cabins for nearly one century as opposed to New England where by the 1680s many settlers had built strong dwellings of finished brick and timber. The reason for the differences between these two regions lies in the economics and family structures of the immigrants. In the Chesapeake region the men outnumbered the woman and disease killed many settlers in the area. Families were rendered unstable and stunted. The New England region, however, was rich with intact families that were hearty and healthy. Survival in New England was easier and the family unit was essential in strengthening the Puritans colonies. Also in the Chesapeake regions were the to bacco growers. A large stable dwelling was not the focus of their settlements. The number of slaves one could put to work and the amount of tobacco one could produce determined position in the Chesapeake area. A settler was much more likely to spend any extra money he had on a new slave rather than a more comfortable living environment. Families were a pieced together collage of widows, orphans, and stepchildren. This region was plagued with death and lack of permanence. Some historians argue that the south was also lazy and had not desire to build more permanent housing. It is also true that tobacco only thrived on fresh land so relocating was probably common among the tobacco growers of the Chesapeake area. New Englands puritan population was thriving. The accumulation of wealth and the stability of the family determined social status. The Puritans were after a Utopia in which the intact family played a large role. The goal of the Puritan settlements was a long and carefully thought out plan of purity and permanence. The puritans came with and intent of staying and thriving by any means possible. The Chesapeake Bay people came seeking immediate wealth and riches. The Puritans had many skilled artisans and a very productive work ethic. They believed that by working on their homes, families, town, etc., they were doing Gods work and they were closer to reaching their pure Utopia. The people of the Chesapeake had to economize any wealth toward the purchase of fieldhands. The Puritans were a self-sufficient society, which did not have slaves. The economy was not based on how many people were working the fields. As we analyze the housing in both these regions we see how large an effect the s ocial values and principles of a people can affect the quality of life of those people. Both these groups of people were seeking entirely different things from the Americas. Success came later for the people in the Chesapeake region because they had to emerge from a long period in which men outnumbered women and disease was rampant. We don’t want culture to face your type of commentary any more. You have the right to remain silent†¦Ã¢â‚¬  Needless to say, this scenario would never occur in the American democracy of the present. However, many in America today are advocating censorship to such an extreme that someday events such as this may become a reality. And, though time and time again court cases have ruled against censorship, many continue to fight to limit free speech in America. However, in restraining what the constitution guarantees, there is much at stake. Although many argue that censorship is necessary to protect America’s citizens, it violates one’s freedom of speech found in the First Amendment and should therefore not be practiced. Granted, there are many reasons for advocating censorship that could be justified. Much material that is available in magazines, at the movie theater, and on the internet is considered by many to be extremely offensive. For example, the rock band Rage Against the Machine at times seems to glorify violence. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the Columbine High School gunmen, were fond of this band, and some of Rage Against the Machine’s lyrics have been assumed to have inspired the boys’ violent act. In many cases, evil can be advocated in forms of speech, causing many to believe that in order to prevent wrong from prevailing, censorship must be practiced with a fervor. ABUSE OF WOMAN'S RIGHTS A man once approached me and asked, â€Å"Could you describe a woman in three words?† I than asked â€Å"A woman from which century, the 15th or the 20th?† He than said â€Å"Both!† After a moment of thought I replied, † A woman from the 15th century would be, gentle, loving and inspiring† than I paused†¦ and confidently continued † However a woman from the 20th century would be, greedy, greedy and greedy†. You might all be wondering why I have such pessimistic views towards the woman of the 20th century even though I'm a woman, right? Since 1848, the birth of the Woman Liberation Movement, many women of the world have changed their traditional feminine ways just to obtain what they call as ‘equal rights'. I have no objections to the term ‘equal rights' as every human being despite female or male deserve to be treated equally. However due to the expansion of this movement many beliefs have been misunderstood, for example a woman's age is everything. In this century, the 21st century, if a woman is less than 20 years of age they have no responsibilities, they call it freedom. If a woman is less than 30 years old their career is everything and marriage should just be a distant dream. However if a woman were less than 40 years of age they would have to juggle a family life and their career but soon confronted with a need to lead a free life. As woman gradually grow older they ‘free' again just like they were when younger than 20. This is the message that ‘Hollywood' brings forward to every woman of the world, but if you were to compare movies of the past to those of today the personality and role of woman have changed dramatically. The Woman Liberation Movement did finally achieve their long wished dream, and that is to obtain equal rights. After awhile the movement was misunderstood and women of the world started rebelling/ protesting against nothing. All these women were just greedy for fame, money and mostly power. For many years these women demanded equal rights. However in the book of law it states that ‘women should be protected as they are the weaker species'. Where is the just in that? If woman are the weaker species and every woman of the world agreed to this law why do they ask for equal rights? The equalization in opportunities, why? If they wanted equal rights so badly the first thing that should have protested against was this law. Why was this law made in the first place? That is because it was designed to protect woman, to protect woman from the outside world and this weaker gender could be very vulnerable if caught alone. That is why this law was designed. Why haven't they rebelled against this law? That's because they are all very aware of the dangers that lie before them if this law wasn't present. The risk of anything happening to them would be twice the amount. When Eve was first made wasn't she made from one of the ribs of Adam? Eve came from a part of Adam. Doesn't that make her not as equal in everything compared to Adam? Eve just came from one tiny part if compared against the rest of Adam's body. Why do you think God made it that way? A woman is the carrier of life; they were designed for that one purpose. A woman's body is not made built like a man's, which restricts a woman from doing a man's job. Perhaps woman are bored doing nothing at home, not being able to obtain and education, or money to support them self. My point is not to go against any of this issues, my purpose is to restrict the obsessions in believing that woman deserve more at this current century. We, the women have asked for more than we can ever afford. If a woman was a president and she was pregnant does that make her exempted from her duties? Won't that affect the country if she has to juggle parenting and ruling a country? A man doesn't go through that phase, that's why males are the leaders of the world, that's the secret behind that. I'm begging every single woman of the world right now, to get an education, get a start in your career but don't let it affect anything especially your children, return the natural feminine ways that woman are created to be and don't be greedy for more than you already have because if the Woman's Liberation Movements really did care about the woman of the world less women would be raped every year, less women would suffer financial problems, less women would be illiterate and less women would die due to just being a woman. I'm now pleading to everyone to take a stand, don't follow the temptations, and follow the true path because that path would lead you to the greatest success you can ever achieve. Thank you.
